This jacket has served me well in my department. I enjoy not having to wear the official fire breakaway vests, as they become a bother in operations. This jacket is fully outstanding, although it is a little bit hard to clean.
I bought the jacket as a dual use jacket for the fire department and the railroad that requires ANSI reflective wear.
The zippers on the hand pockets dig in at the wrists and at a somewhat awkward angle. Side "stash" pockets would be a better solution.
As it is windproof, you can almost overheat in this jacket unless it is unzipped and if using the existing side zippers, they go up too far and the "wings of the jacket" flail out too much when moving around. Zippered openings to allow heat out would be great.
Being that firefighting and railroad is a dangerous job, the jacket can get dirty. I have followed the care instructions but dirt/grime will not wash out. The material in the reflective part of the jacket seems to absorb the dirt (and even pen ink) and will not wash out giving it a generally dirty work.
The microphone clip tabs do not work with Motorola speaker mics. They are just a tad too small.
Also thread from the refelective material is loose and starting to thread out a tad.
Biggest gripe: hand pockets, large side zip. Does allow heat to escape when "standing around" rendering feeling cold, doesn't let heat escape when active.
I expected something more in between with the price point, but I'd just like to have a clean looking jacket.
Item seems great-- Unfortunately, weather has moderated since its arrival so I have not had a good opportunity to evaluate. I can tell from the feel that it will be useful when conditions warrant more protection from the elements than the lighter jacket offers
I bought this jacket for the wind and cold weather working on an assignment in China and is it great. It really blocks the wind and weather. Used it mostly without the liner over a hoodie and was warn outside for long hours in the cold. The pockets are great allowing me to carry numerous tools, gloves, etc. I would highly recommend this to anyone. When wearing it reversed it the liner zipper is exposed and should be covered.
Great jacket, Have never got cold wearing this. Have to take it off in the truck I get too warm. Can be a little bulky.
Would buy it again.
The extreme visibility of this parka was a life saver for me, being so bright in headlight range that it woke a dozing driver who was on track to strike me very early one morning with her vehicle. It is warm, has great pockets, and works in really bad weather.
The side zippers go too far up the arm! I can't think of any reason for them to be that long. I liked the old style with the 12" locking zipper instead. This one opens all by itself and before I know it the coat's flapping open in the breeze! I had tabs sewn in to keep the zippers down near my equipment (Thanks 5.11 rep!).
I wish this had a way to add patches and a badge tab to the black side of the coat without sewing through the waterproof side so I could meet department regulations and wear it reversed as intended. Other wise a GREAT coat and alot of the guys here wear them. Very typical of the quality expected from 5.11
As a Paramedic in northern NH, I spend more than half of the year in an out of jackets, and this is one of the best jackets Ive ever owned, hands down. Ive had it for a year, and its still my go to jacket when I head to work. Even without the liner, its still very warm. Theres alot of pockets for all the equipment I like to carry. The liner is very warm, but it makes the jacket very bulkly and heavy. I hardly ever wear the jacket with the liner attached. The liner makes a great stand alone jacket for those cool fall days, and I actually use it as an off duty jacket. Its very bright, and everyone complains that Im blinding them when I walk into the room, though considering the conditions we work in, thats not a bad thing. When it comes to washing, I found that the various layers of the shell will start to separate after the first wash.
All in all, a great jacket for the EMS response and roadside safety.
This jacket is great for 3 season wear. In spring/fall you can use either the fleece liner by its self during day operations and then use the hi vis shell for night ops. During the winter just zip in the liner and no matter how cold it gets you're all set. In fact I found myself taking the jacket off in the back of the rescue a few times because it was too warm. The visibility of this jacket is great. While working on the side of a highway or any road day or night you can be sure that you will be seen. The only real downside to this jacket is that its bulky and heavy when you have the liner zipped in. I would recommend this product to anyone who works on or near the road at night.
