The 5.11 Tactical L/S canvas shirt is the best shirt that I have ever purchased, except for the Taclite and the earlier ripstop style. The sleeve loops, collar tabs and vented back in addition to the hidden pockets make this shirt a classic.
However the 5.11 Tactical DENIM shirt is the best shirt EVER MADE!!
Too bad 5.11 refuses to reinstate this style as it could be a classic. You don’t get to be a classic if it is discontinued. Fortunately I was foresighted enough to purchase 6 back when I was in BIAP in 2007 and I still have 3 in the bag!
I was a field engineer in Iraq and Afghanistan and the quality of the construction of this shirt is top notch. They also just fit!! I generally purchase Large Tall as I am 6’1 but weigh in at 200# and have long arms. The sleeves though are just about right. The Large works except the tails are short just a tad.
I do not understand what the so called “Expedition” is but I do know it has no vented back, no sleeve loops and the collar is not button down. If you want a TRUE expedition go over to Royal Robbins. 5.11 was spun off by Royal Robbins.
I was looking for a shirt with adequate pockets to accommodate my note book and map. The hidden pockets are easily accessed with one hand, and are large enough for documents and maps.
The sizing is very odd. I call it skinny fat sizing. I wear an XL. 6' 240lbs. The xl shirt just barely fits my shoulders and the body is huge. A 350 lb man could fit in this with narrow shoulders. I love the shirt though. Looks great just too much slop in the body.
I have been buying 5.11 clothing and gear for several years and I have never been let down. I love these shirts and wear them just about everyday. The are a little bigger than what is stated so maybe buy 1 size smaller. I am in-between the L & XL. I just wish they would bring back the Tall sizes. Please Please bring back the Tall sizes! Anyway - these are very comfortable and last. I like the built in cooling system and stain proofing. One great shirt!
Best shirt I ever owned. But they no longer fit as the TALL Size is not offered anymore. Sure hope you bring it back.
This shirt is, as we say in the mountaineering community, "bomb proof". The seems are very well sewed, the fabric is very breathable, and it easy to sew new things to, such as velcro for patches, etc.
However, this shirt is sized wrong; It fits like a tent! Order, at least, one size smaller than the sizing chart says. And please note that the sizing chart does explain that the clothing is bigger than the measurements on the chart, but it doesn't say that they are several inches larger than the actual measurements. According to the charts, I need a large, but reading that others have had a similar problem, I ordered a medium...and guess what...it was huge! Going to try a small now.
Would rate at 4-stars if it weren't for the sizing silliness.
Note to company: You may want to either check your supplier is actually labeling these correctly, or reduce the extra-room you build into the sizing of these shirts.
i have 6 of these shirts. i work oil and gas construction for over 50 years and believe i have finally found the near perfect work shirt. near perfect because the shirt pockets are not quite deep enough to close the flap on a 3 by 5 inch note book i.e foray or other makes. nor are the pockets deep enough to put a large cell phone, iphone 6 plus or equivalent samsung and close the pocket flap. little research by 5.11 might have this corrected.
There are great shirts, but I need the tall size.
This shirt is constructed like a tank. Love the pockets feature Velcro closures for fast access. Pen holders and all other pockets well thought out and constructed for hard use.
My work place requires this shirt as part of my uniform. I am a female, but my workplace does not have any women's shirts available as uniform shirts (lucky me!). Anyway, I have a small frame and was worried that a small would be too big, but after consulting the size chart and talking with a customer service rep, I ordered a small (which the size chart indicates has a 36" chest). Well, the size chart lies. The small shirt I received has a 42" chest, which makes this shirt enormous on me. It would be helpful if the information describing the shirt was actually correct. The shirt is embroidered, so probably not returnable, and is completely useless to me.
