I wore this "waterproof" parka in 2 significant rain storms- once in May 2016, and April 2017. Both times I was out in a hard rain for 3-4 hours. Both times this parka let me down. I was soaking wet! The parka appears as if it just came out of the washer! Both sides were dripping wet! It is NOT "waterproof"!
I have three problems with this jacket:
First, the full length Pit-zip can work up from bottom and expose more of your body to the elements. I'd like to see a separate, smaller Pit-zip.
Second, the zipper itself leakes. I have stood in pooring rain and blizards in the Sierra Nevadas and the water works through the zipper.
Third, I'd like a double zipper on the front so that you can take care of "nature calls" without completely unzipping the front.
So I Love this Jacket, when I use it. I am a Paramedic and use it on scene of vehicle accidents and in wet weather. Granted I am in Southern California which is not known for wet weather but it does the job. The jacket breathes well when I am moving and grooving on scene. I would definatley recommend it.
My only complaint is that in the 2 year life of my first jacket it spent more days draped over the back of seat than being used. As a result, the material at the top of the back where it meets the collar wore through and tore at the seam. I know that it is simple wear and tear and as a result bought another one to replace my current jacket. My only recommendation would be to be careful how you store it.
I am an Aviation Maintenance Technician(AMT) out in Seattle area and so far this has kept nice and dry out on our open-air flightline. As you can imagine there's plenty of moisture out here so being dry is really critical for me. I haven't worn it yet through our worst weather yet, but thus far it's been great!
It is light enough that it feels like it breathes, and warm enough to act as an above average windbreaker, but I would certainly combine it with a liner of some kind for extra cold protection when it matters.
I did order this in one size larger than would fit me so I could layer underneath it, and it is not so big that I am swimming in it, but large enough that I can totally wear a hoodie and other layers beneath it. So far, a grear product and at a good price for wet weather gear!
This product protects from rain, blood and trafic but its fit is very uncomfertable. The sleev length is too short the size of the sleeves would allow for 20" Biceps. The body of the coat is over generes making it difficult to work in a car accident when your coat is catching and draging on things. My build is atheletic but I need a this jacket with size large sleeves, size small body with size large shoulders. I often only were this coat for short periods of time but come winter I will were my 5.11 Responder coat in size large.
Purchase this for use on the wheel. Generous cut, good adjustable venting, water tight and breathable. Have worn this coat on the wheel on sunny 80 degree days and 18 degree days. Can fit numerous layers under coat. I also have worn this coat on a 8 hour ride in rain and sleet and stayed dry. An adjustable waist and neck strap would make this coat better. Only problem now is I always have to ride in the rear because the coat is so bright the lead wheel man can see the location of the last wheel, me.
Great fit, visibility and warmth. Bought it from Galls and when I bought the fleece liner it was definitely not 5.11 brand...It is really water resistant but I would not call it waterproof. Wish it had an ID panel on the back and front with the high viz yellow background.
I purchased this jacket to use as rain gear for motor escorts. On one 4 day escort event, we were rained and poured on for 3 1/2 days. This jacket kept me dry, warm and safe. Compared to the other motor officers, I was extremely visible in the diminished light conditions. Pockets are plentiful and well thought out, as well as stay dry. I would recommend this jacket to everyone.
