We purchased multiple Responder 84 ALS backpacks for our Fire Department. They are junk. Stay away from these bags. The bottoms need to be reinforced. In less than 6 months these bags were unusable. Also 5.11 did nothing to make this right.
Its a decent bag, hopefully a starting point for 5.11. It is certainly an improvement over what our department has used in the past. Good for special events, and strong believer that all EMS bags need a way to have 2 straps and fit on your back. However I feel that this was not the best thought through bag. It seems very generic and consistent with all of the other 5.11 backpacks. The only addition was a red and blue pouch, as well as an okay O2 bottle strap. When it was all put together it is sort of awkward and uneven. It sits on the back sort of crooked with the O2 on the side like designed, so had to move to middle and put pouches on either side making the bag bulge more than would like. The front pocket is more for pens pencils and paper rather than trauma equipment. I feel that its a well made bag and not at all disappointed however feel there is some room to improve 5.11!
The bag is more than large enough for our needs. It is a bit on the large side so if the missio/op. calls for quick movement, a lot of walking or the ability to move in and out of tight spaces quickly, a smaller option would be adviseable. This good bag to get all of your med gear in for field ops. and for a first responder/medic to have what is needed to stabilize untile vac. to better med. care.
I am not a EMS I am a sailor I live out of this bag year round. I pack it to the brim the zippers the stiching everthing is still holding up with no signs of wear. This was a very well thought out design
This bag is great, it fits literally everything that I need to carry in to a patients house for any job from man flu to cardiac arrest. its really well constructed and very hard wearing. the straps are really comfortable and spread the heavy load really well.
The IV and Airway bags are great, they work really well and are well thought out. if anything it is a little bulky when it full but that is not a criticism more of a reality of the kit that I carry.
Its a well thought though bag that I would recommend.
Just thought you might want to hear this one. I was off duty the other day and passed scene of a RTC. A car had T boned another car at a junction one trapped inside and one holding his neck. I was carrying my BLS bag and the 84 as well and as no one on scene and it was peak traffic I stopped and did the dutiful thing.
While performing manual inline stabilisation I directed the female on the phone calling 999 to move her car out of harms way and go sit in her car as she was shocked. I was powerless to prevent her backing up and over my BLS bag then to add insult driving forward and struggling so then revving and forcing her Honda CRV over my fully loaded 84 responder bag!!!! Words I do not want to type rushed through my mind and somehow stayed in it not getting released in a barrage to her. Anyway suffice to say both bags survived with massive tyre marks that have cleaned off pretty well. All contents were ok and a few scuffs and bit of tearing to the top of the bag which I think did well considering I saw the car visibly wheel spin on the bag grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
I have used this pack mostly as a first-in pack while operating in urban first responder environments. I have also used it in the West Texas mountains doing wilderness medicine and SAR. This summer I plan on using it in the mountains in NE New Mexico doing the same. I've even used to to carry medical supplies for my rugby team! Anyway, this is an extremely versatile pack with a very large space for anything you may need to put in it. The oxygen tank holder does a fantastic job and does not allow for any movement and keeps the tank in a comfortable location. I also appreciate the loops on the outside, as it makes it simple to carry more items as long as you hook on a couple carabiners! FANTASTIC PACK!
over all the Bag is great loading was easy plenty of room great features the only problem I have is with the I.V. and Airway Bag they could have been designed better
I use this pack primarily for wilderness SAR but have also used it for general EMT/EMS response. This pack is extremely comfortable when packed full (40-50lbs) for bushwhacking and scrambling and even general backpacking. It has room for everything you would need and more. I am able to pack all my EMS and SAR gear into the pack with a little bit of room left. The only difficult thing I have ran into is carrying my single rope with the bag but this bag was not designed for such. I honestly could not ask for more in a bag for SAR and EMS work. 5.11 you have made an amazing product and have gained a customer for life. Thanks 5.11!
This is an excellent medic bag. The modules inside are great for organizing IV and intubation equipment and there is plenty of other room to add BLS supplies as well. C-collars and multi trauma dressings fit into the large compartment in front without having to be bent. The only downside is that it is a little heavy when you add the o2 tank, but that is the same with any combo bag.
