I ordered these shirts and one from a competitor who has a similar style of shirt.
While I normally stand by 5.11 as makers of excellent products for LE/Military, I cannot give this shirt top marks. I found that while the quality, durability and fit are all excellent, the main reason I bought this shirt (heat and moisture wicking) falls far short of its competition.
Rather than use a moisture wicking material it feels to be closer to a cotton T-shirt style of fabric. As a result after a 12 hour shift working in full armor and duty equipment I find myself soaked in sweat, smelling terrible, with the shirt sticking to my body, and not really providing the relief of the competition.
The upper portion of the shirt is excellent. It is cool, comfortable and quick drying. The lower component where it counts the most, unfortunately falls short of my expectations.
In addition to the shirt I also supplement it with a 221B Tactical mesh Undervest which is also designed to pull away sweat and heat and allow greater airflow under my external carrier.
The other shirt also works better in conjunction with the 221B equipment as well.
Add into the equation the cost factor that the competitor sells their shirt for an MSRP of 49.99 USD vs $83.25 CAD for the 5.11 version, and I could buy 3 of the other shirts for 2 of the 5.11's...
I am greatly disappointed in the overall performance of the shirt. While I still wear them, as they are better than having to wear a base wicking layer with a standard uniform shirt on top, I would say that if you work in a hot humid environment, there are better options out there.
If 5.11 were to make a version of this shirt using a lighter, moisture wicking material I would be much more inclined to recommend it.
I'm a pretty loyal customer and would still endorse most of the 5.11 brand, but in closing, this shirt doesn't do enough for the price you pay.
