I picked up a couple of these recently when I found them on sale. I've worn 5.11 clothing, mostly shirts, for years, but I hadn't worn these shirts until recently. That said, I had hi expectations, my dept issues TDU pants as our duty pants, and the pants are tuff as nails, and comfortable.
Now, these shirts. They're great, I work in a plain clothes assignment, but regularly end up in the brush working. I also spend a good amount of time on the range. These shirts are perfect for the more casual assignments I find myself in. The shirt has a casual look when worn untucked, and it covers my equipment' handgun (OWB/IWB), 2 mags, flashlight (SF 6P), handcuffs, and sometimes a rifle mag.
So, not only does the shirt cover my equipment, it has a nice straight and clean fit. I recommend this shirt, I plan to get a couple more in different colors.
5.11 really missed the mark with this one when they decided to discontinue the thicker ripstop short sleeve. As a Commercial Vehicle Officer, I have worn the 5.11 short sleeve ripstop for the past 7 plus years and they have been fantastic! Five stars all the way for the older short sleeve ripstop. I crawl under Big Rigs for a living so my uniforms are constantly getting caught up on bolts etc....and my ripstop have lasted me 7 years! I recently decided to get some new short sleeves as mine were starting to fade....and my holster has finally worn a hole on the right side of my pants where it rubs my leg.
I go to uniform shop #1 and see these thin short sleeves and think something must be wrong....maybe a defective lot? So I go to another uniform shop....same thing! I go to the third uniform shop and it's the same situation! These are super thin short sleeves that won't last in my line of work.....and by the way, they wrinkle super easy. I never had to iron my older ripstop short sleeves, just pull them out of the dryer and go. With these, they wrinkle EASY and even if you iron them, they will be wrinkled almost immediately! These are so thin you can see light through them..... So anyways, the manager at the third uniform shop informs me that 5.11 discontinued the thicker ripstop (same material as pants). He said 5.11 assumed anyone buying short sleeves wanted them to be the lighter weight material to be cooler. He also said that he has been getting nothing but complaints from his customers as they all want the thicker material.
Anyways, since I didn't have a choice, I bought 2 pair of these lighter weight short sleeves and they have been a huge disappointment. I guess I will be forced into buying the long sleeves from here on out as the long sleeves are still made from the quality, thicker, longer lasting material that does not wrinkle.
5.11 if your listening please bring back the thicker material for the short sleeve! Please continue to make the short sleeve from the same material as the long sleeve. Your TDU's made from the thicker ripstop material are 5 star all the way! This new thinner material is pointless :(
