The story behind...

The T-Shirt

The T-shirt is more than a basic layer. It carries a history as enduring as its comfort. Born from practicality in the Navy and on the battlefields of the 20th century, it has since become the most universal piece of clothing in the world.

Cut for Comfort

For centuries, undergarments were often cumbersome one-piece Long John style cotton garments. As early as the late 19th century, labourers and sailors began cutting these into separate tops and bottoms for better comfort in hot environments. It was from this practical modification that the basic form of the modern T-shirt was born.

In 1913, recognising its potential, the U.S. Navy began issuing white, short-sleeved crew-neck shirts as standard undershirts for sailors. The garment’s easy laundering, breathability, and quick-drying properties made it ideal for the often-humid conditions aboard ships and in naval operations.

From Standard-Issue to Cultural Icon

By World War I, US soldiers also wore T-shirts both as undergarments and training tops as well as often shedding their uniform during downtime. This was especially the case during WWII in theatres such as the Pacific where the humid climate made their heavy uniforms unbearable.

When millions of servicemen returned home after WWII, they continued the habit of wearing T-shirts as casual outerwear. Word spread rapidly leading to Hollywood’s rebellious fashion icons Marlon Brando and James Dean cooly donning this utility garment. The rest, as they say, is history.
