THE STORY OF THE DESERT BOOT

Here’s a piece of footwear history you might not expect: the humble desert boot, or chukka boot, has genuine military origins! Its journey starts in the challenging North African campaigns of World War II. British officers serving with the Eighth Army soon realized that their standard-issue boots were a real liability in the desert heat and sand – too heavy and cumbersome.

FROM THE SANDS OF NORTH AFRICA…

Searching for better options, these resourceful officers explored the local markets in Cairo. There, they came across simple, lightweight ankle boots made by local craftsmen. These boots, based on a South African design called the “veldskoen" (field shoe), were typically made from rough-out suede with soft, flexible crepe rubber soles.

These makeshift chukkas quickly proved their worth. They were quiet on patrol, breathable in the heat, and incredibly comfortable for long treks over sandy terrain. The crepe sole was a revelation – unlike harder materials, it didn’t clog with sand. The locally sourced suede handled the arid conditions and heat far better than traditional polished leather. Some officers even continued to wear variations of these boots when they were later deployed to places like Burma.

After the war, the potential of this simple, battle-proven design wasn’t forgotten. Nathan Clark, a British officer who had served overseas and was part of the Clarks shoe family, was inspired by these boots. He brought the concept back home and, in 1950, introduced the now-iconic Clarks Desert Boot to the mass market.

It’s remarkable how a locally sourced, civilian boot became unofficial kit for British soldiers in one of history’s toughest theatres of war. What worked so well for the British Army’s “Desert Rats” navigating the sands of El Alamein wasn’t army standard-issue, but it outperformed much that was. The result? A battle-tested design that went on to inspire a footwear classic.
