I've been a cop for 15 years and, after 2 months of wear, I can say this is the most comfortable boot I've owned. I hate having to tie my boots every shift, which is why I choose a pair with side zip. This leads me to my only complaint and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. The zipper should have been angled towards the toe more than it is. The current placement, at least with my feet, make the boot very difficult to remove without un-tieing them, which defeats the whole purpose of the side zip.
My first pair of boots from 5.11 and I am definitely impressed with the quality and price. There is much more expensive stuff out there that is below this level of fit and finish. Double stitching, good components, good design. On to the boots themselves; I would recommend going a half size up from your normal sizing even with stone average feet per traditional sizing, if you like your boots anything other than slightly snug fitting. If you are buying these for work boots, they are (imo) designed more for hiking/walking work more than for being abused. The leather is a softer leather and the toe crease where the boots bend is pretty pronounced after break in. I can't imagine they would take heavy scuffing well and would maybe even tear over time. For hiking/walking work though, they are excellent. Very comfortable and more supportive and protective than a traditional patrol style boot. Balanced tread pattern for good grip but not too deep as to track mud, and studs on the inside side sole is a nice touch for climbing. Very happy with the boots.
I've been wearing my ATAC's for over year. These boots are the best boots I've owned in a while! They're light, tough, comfortable. I'm on my 2nd pair now and have not given another pair a second thought for my everyday and hunting boots except when it's very wet ( wading through calf deep water ). I have a special pair of boots for those situations. After 10 yrs in our U.S. NAVY I only wished we had such an awesome duty boot! It would be in our servicemen and women to have this quality boot as part of the uniform.
Thank You 511 for such an awesome product! My wife purchased my second pair of these boots today! Now I have a pair of church boots for a while!
I bought my first pair of the 511 ATAC's over a year ago. I work, hunt, fish and play in these boots. The only problem I've had is the insole doesn't hold up as I think it should. Other than that I can't think of any other problem I've had with these boots.
I served in the U.S. NAVY for 10 years! Although my original boondockers were the toughest boots I've ever owned! But! The were the most uncomfortable boots ever. When our duty boots changed the durability level dropped and the comfort level got much better! I only wish we had the opportunity to have such a quality boots as the 511 ATAC boots! I asked my wife to order another pair of these boots today. She said she would after she came back from lunch with her coworkers. They decided to go to the local goodwill. She came home carrying a boot box. It had a brand new pair of ATAC's in my size. The insoles were missing, it had the packing slip and receipt in the box. She paid their price for these boots! ( I don't want to say what she paid for them, but, it was a BLESSING!) They are brand new!! What an awesome DAY!!! THANKS 5.11 for building such a top quality boot!!! I highly recommend these boots to anyone for everyday use, to the most extreme use boots! I even polish mine and wear them to church occasionally.
I've worn these boots almost every day in different terrain from hiking up mountains in wv to running on gravel and pavement. Other reviews say they stink, aren't water proof, and scuff. All of those are true but in all honesty, you are going to do hard work in these and so if you stink them up then set them outside or in the garage and let them breath overnight if it gets too bad (which it probably won't), as for waterproofing.....it's a side zipper boot, kinda obvious it won't be completely waterproof but it does keep out more water than I expected. And scuffing....again, these are workboots so they aren't made to stay super pretty, honestly they look better than me covered in scuffs and dirt from my adventures in them rather than always looking new. All in all if you want boots that will last through years of work, are fast to put on, and are some of the best priced boots for the quality then these are for you. If you are worried about smells, scuffs, or walking through 6+inches of water with side zip boots then you should look elsewhere.
The A.T.A.C. Storm is a durable and compfortable boot.
I am a Federal Correctional Officer and have been wearing these boots every single day for the last 18 months and I have not had a single problem with them. I did however change the insole when I bought them to something more supportive as I am on my feet all day long. If you add a Dr.Scholls insole they are even more comfortable, my feet don't hurt after a long shift. 10/10
I am member of the fire dept and disaster team. when I first purchased the boots and worm them a few days, they stunk to high heaven just from sweating. I have the ATAC for a year and certainly not waterproof. whether mopping up a grass fire or being in the rain, they leak. they are not comfortable on hard concrete flooring. Looking other vendor for boots. I was really expecting something better considering the cost.
Really good boots!
These boots scuff way to easy. Been having them a month and the entire toe is scuffed on both boots. Absolutely no way to pushy them to restore. They look awful now and the material literal almost rub off with your finger tips... I like the boots themselves, comfortable and surprisingly light weight. They feel great on my ankle and have good support. Could maybe use a gel insole but not necessary. Overall I'm happy I just can't believe the incredibly cheap material used in the front of the boot. I will stick worry 5.11 no doubt, but may look at other models in the future
