5.11 makes terrific kit, however the Defender Flex Pants fall short on delivery. I own three pairs of the DFP all in different colors and all sized the same as my other six pairs of Ridgelines and three pairs of Apex pants so in terms of sizing they are the same sizing. The fit however is very different and I attribute that to the increased blend of cotton in the DFP fabric. The bad: DFPs fabric blend shrinks significantly after the first two wash cycles, specifically the inseam length -- another four wash cycles and my pants will be shorts and secondly, due to the low rider waistband and clinginess of the fabric the area around the thighs needs constant adjustment especially when sitting. If you typically wear an athletic fit pant then these are likely not what you are looking for simply due to the cut around the thigh/crotch area. The good: they kept to the mag pockets over the back patch pockets also acting as terrific cell phone pockets; double belt loops at the 6 o'clock help with the droop while crouching down caused by the low rider waistband; watch pocket on right side is deeper than average and can accommodate more than just a life saver; unlike other reviews I actually prefer the seemingly shallow front pockets but if you're looking for Apex-like pant pockets you won't have those with the DFP. Overall if the fabric/weave did not cause the legs to shrink and if the low rider waistband was a normal waistband which adult males prefer the pants would be five stars like so many other 5.11 pants, however since I have now owned these pants for a few months and have had ample time to assess their quality I wanted to post a review. If 5.11 would simply make a pant from the same fabric and design as the Apex less the side cargo pockets it would be a home run for those of us who need to wear their product in a semi-business casual manner without the tactical-like look of the side cargo pockets.
I purchased a pair of the slims and a pair of straights. I found the slims to be a tad too slim and not very boot friendly. The straights were boot friendly but too baggy for my taste.
If only 5.11 could made a "goldy locks" pair aka slim-straights, I would buy one in each color :)
I'm 5'9" and 155 pounds. Ordered 30 waist and 32 length. Fit like I expected. Like the material and the look. Well fitting and easy to move in. Love the rear pocket that sits just above and to the side of the main back pocket. Perfect for a knife or flashlight and since it sits more to the side, you don't end up sitting on whatever it is you have in them. Front pockets are poorly designed. They are wide and shallow. Not sure how you design such a nice pair of pants and then completely bomb on the front pockets. I carry an iphone 5s, which isn't large compared to newer phones, and when I sit it presses up into my hip. Not painful, just annoying. Not sure why they didn't just stick with the standard pocket they have on many of their other pants. Create a slightly narrower and deeper front pocket and these are a solid 5 stars. Unfortunately, 5.11 will more than likely not make any changes and I'll have to keep looking for the ever elusive perfect pair of pants.
These pants fit perfect over boots. Comfortable waist band and the pants have nice stretch when bending down. I’ll be buying more.
I find these pants extremely useful!! I am a "Grey Angel" (A First Responder, but not attached to an EMS unit, a person who was a Combat Medic, etc) its easy to put my kit in a place where I can get access to it! Gonna get a few more pairs!! Much better than wearing tactical pants! I look normal!!
I often used pocket carry for CCW. It would be better if the front pockets were a bit deeper, as they are really a bit too short for pocket carry of a small revolver or a small automatic. Other than that they should be good. Returning original pair to a third party, and exchanging, as pants fabric had some small holes in it???
Pants fit and feel great - very comfortable. Probably my new favorite pants The pockets are shallow though. Both the front and rear pockets could be deeper.
I'm not sure where all these rave reviews are coming from, but these are one of the worst pants ever. These are low-rise and tight. They're akin to skinny jeans without the tapered leg. If these are this tight, I'm guessing the slim fit version of these are even worse.
I'm 6'1 and weigh 190 lbs. My waist is a 33. I bought these in size 34x34 and the waist is slightly loose (not a problem there). However, it's low rise. I despise low rise anything. You feel like you have to constantly pull them up and there's not enough material.
The worst part is the fit of the thigh area. These are tight. Like I said, they fit like skinny jeans. I have no idea how anyone can put anything in these pockets, let alone ammo clips and other tools. I can't even fit my wallet or cell phone in these pants.
Extremely uncomfortable and tight. I also think these aren't a true 34 inch inseam. They don't break properly at the ankle area and seem to be a bit short.
Just got mine today! I will be getting more as these will be replacing all my pants. For future buyers, I’m 6’ 185lbs, and got 33x34 and they fit perfect. I've been using a t-rex sidecar holster with a G19 and the pants work great. I also will carry a S&W shield iwb at about 4:00, pants do great. My belt is a Snake Eater Tactical edc 1.5”.
I've tried Duluth flex fire hose, Kuhl renegade and revolver, carhartts, cinch, levi...5.11 defender is all I want now.
I have the Defender Flex bluejeans, and they are amazing, so I figured I would pick up a few pair of the Defender Flex Straight Pants in khaki. I finally got them shipped (5.11 is a little slow in this arena, but it’s all good) and wore them to work all day yesterday. I work mostly in an office setting now working computer crimes, so I carry strong side OWB Glock 23. The belt loop placement is perfect for this kind of carry for me, but you don't need to be an LEO to enjoy what these pants have to offer. These pants wear well, very light feeling, and move with your body very naturally. The waistband is also perfect for IWB, which is how I carry when I am commuting, but in the appendix position. I replaced the 5.11 “Covert Khaki 2.0” pants with these, and they easily pass for normal business casual pants. In fact, I had several people in my office comment on them and ask me to send them the link for these pants. I even ordered three more pair to round out my wardrobe. I have to say, 5.11 has really come a long way over the years, and these will be my new pants no matter what the situation calls for. Good job guys!
